If there is a site, it is important to correctly assess its capabilities and outline a planting plan so that the land is not empty. But it's one thing when there is a lot of space, and there are no problems with placement, and another thing when there is very little space. How do I place trees on it? Here the lingonberry apple tree comes to the rescue.
Thanks to its compact size, the tree will fit on a modest piece of land. In terms of yield, it is not at all inferior to other varieties of apple trees, and caring for a hybrid is much more convenient.
History of appearance
Thanks to breeders, there are many varieties of fruit trees that can be grown in different regions of the country of Russia. Moreover, there are very few varieties of summer apple trees. Scientists under the leadership of Alexander Vasilyevich Popov set a goal to improve this situation for the better.
As a result of tests on the basis of FGBNU VSTISP, this hybrid was obtained. It is impossible to establish his "parents". Scientists used the practice of free pollination. In 1976, variety trials were carried out, as a result of which the hybrid was placed in the State Register of Varietal Crops.
The name of the hybrid is given in honor of the lingonberry berry due to the similarity of some characteristics: in particular, compact size, sweet and sour taste and semi-moon shape of the fruit.
Main characteristics
The hybrid is below average in size - it reaches 2-3 meters in height. This allows it to be classified as a dwarf tree species. The crown is weeping and spreading. The branches grow very slowly - about 5-7 cm per year.
The crown has the usual gray color and medium deciduous density. The branches are of small thickness, painted in purple-brown tones, the leaves themselves are large green. Due to the large combination of colors, the apple tree looks beautiful in the warm season.
The crop begins to bloom in late spring and bears fruit in early fall. The type of fruiting is mixed. Ovaries are formed on spurs, simple rabbits and spears.
Description of the fruits of the apple tree Lingonberry
The hybrid has good yield indicators. From a tree, according to the Register, an average of 138 centners per hectare can be harvested per season. Apples can be characterized as follows:
- have a weight of about 100-120 grams;
- the shape is semi-lunate, round and slightly elongated, somewhat reminiscent of a barrel;
- the color is pale green with a blurred lingonberry "blush";
- the skin is dense, oily to the touch;
- the peduncle is thin, of medium length, slightly curved;
- the pulp is light cream in color, coarse, medium density;
- the taste is slightly rough, sweet and sour;
- pleasant aroma is moderately expressed;
- harvested apples are stored for 2-3 weeks.
You can use the fruits in various ways: eat fresh, cook compotes, make dried fruits or spin jam. Apples of this variety give off a lot of juice.
Planting a seedling
The hybrid is not capricious in character. But you should pay great attention to the choice of a seedling from the seller. Which one is better to choose? Follow these guidelines:
- planting material is best chosen from local producers;
- the age of plants should not be more than 2 years;
- it is necessary to carefully examine the roots of the selected seedling, they should be free of pests, mold, chips, rot, as well as shoots on the branches.
This dwarf tree, like ordinary apple trees, loves well-lit places and oxygenated soil. Leached chernozem, sandy loam, loamy or floodplain soils will do. Acidity - not higher than pH 6.0. Groundwater - at around 2-2.5 meters.
The apple tree loves feeding. In the spring, it is recommended to use nitrogen fertilizers, in the summer - potash, and in the fall - potassium-phosphorus. They are sprinkled on the ground around the tree, and then watered.
Landing technology:
- The preparation of the hole is carried out a month before the time of planting the seedling. To do this, they pull out a hole measuring 1x1 m. A third of the earth dug out of it is mixed with fertilizers: horse humus, humus, superphosphate, potassium and ash. Wait for the allotted time;
- A mound is formed in the hole, on which the seedling is installed. The roots must be well spread. You cannot cut them off;
- The remaining 2/3 of the previously dug earth is covered with a seedling. The root collar (i.e. the place where the roots go into the trunk) should be above the ground;
- Set a peg, water the plant abundantly;
- It is better to mulch the soil when planting.
Apple tree care
The tree is unpretentious. Thanks to its size, it is easy and convenient to care for it. Periodically, the lingonberry apple tree needs:
- water with one bucket of water in the morning and in the evening every 3-4 months;
- in a day, the soil is loosened and weeds are removed;
- after the beginning of flowering, the tree is sprayed with a solution of fungicides or Bordeaux mixture once a month in order to avoid infection with fungal diseases;
- the plant is fertilized in spring and summer, as well as in autumn;
- shoots growing inside the crown and damaged branches are cut off;
- the harvest is rationed, that is, there should not be many fruits on one branch;
- the tree must be pruned periodically;
- before winter, the tree is sprinkled with dry mulch (15-20 cm), covered with breathable material and a rodent net is installed.
The merits and demerits of culture
Every plant has its own pros and cons. This variety is no exception. Compared to other apple hybrids, it has the following advantages:
- early maturity - the apple tree begins to bear fruit for 2-3 years;
- stable large harvest;
- high threshold of resistance to frost;
- convenient pruning and collection of fruits;
- beautiful presentation of apples;
- a tree needs a small piece of land to grow;
- early harvest.
Of the minuses, the following can be noted:
- short shelf life of apples;
- average resistance to various diseases;
- small fruit size.
It should be noted that some of the shortcomings are conditional. For example, someone does not consider the small size of apples to be a minus. On the contrary, they are sure that the modest parameters of the fruits are advantages.
The apple tree Lingonberry is a real decoration of the garden. She is unpretentious, it is very convenient to look after her. The hybrid easily forgives mistakes for beginners, delighting the owner with delicious fruits.
