Cherry Radonezh (Radonezhskaya) was bred at the All-Russian Research Institute of Lupine, which was created on the basis of the Bryansk experimental station in 1987. Obtained by crossing the Kistevaya x I-I-L variety. The variety has been entered into the state register since 2002. Its distribution area is Central Russia. The main advantages of cherries of this variety: frost resistance, resistance to fungal diseases, berries of this variety are distinguished by good taste.

Cherry Radonezh: variety description

Frost resistance is one of the main advantages of this variety. The tree not only easily tolerates long cold winters, frosts in the spring also do not bring much harm to the plant.

According to research, frost to -5 degrees during flowering damages less than a third of flowers.

Cherry Radonezh gives the first harvest for 4 years of life. Flowering begins in May, the first berries can be harvested at the end of June. According to the description, cherry varieties Radonezh can self-pollinate by 20-40%. But to get a guaranteed yield, he will need other pollinators. Such pollinators can be cherries that are close in terms of flowering, for example: Vladimirskaya, Turgenevskaya.

Cherry Radonezh

The tree belongs to the category of medium-sized, it has a low trunk, an adult plant reaches 3-3.5 meters in height. The crown of the tree is raised, rounded-oval, leaf density is average. Cherry buds are small. Generative (those from which flowers grow) are ovoid, vegetative - conical.

The color of the leaves is dark green, glossy. The leaf has the shape of a wide oval with a sharp top. The leaf plate is flat, the top is pointed. The glands are located at the base of the leaf and petiole.

Briefly about the variety

The cherry blossom has 5 loosely spaced petals. White, saucer-like flowers form inflorescences. The pistil and stamen of the flower are long, the anther is located at the same level with the stigma.

Note! Flowering usually occurs on a one-year growth.

The fruits of this variety are dark red cherries, weighing 4-5 g, with a delicate sweet and sour taste. Each berry is firm, with a long stem, which is easily separated from the fruit. The bone is also easily separated from the pulp. The mass of cherry pits is approximately 8% of the mass of the entire berry.

The berry has a high concentration of vitamin C, sugar contains up to 10%, dry matter - up to 15%. The variety belongs to the category of dessert. It is consumed fresh, it is also suitable for blanks.

Fruit

The Radonezhskaya cherry variety is also unique in that it bears fruit equally well both in large farms and in summer cottages. However, to get a good harvest, you need to know some of the features of its cultivation.

Agrotechnics

For planting, it is better to use seedlings of two years old.

  • It is better to plant cherries in spring, the most suitable time is mid-April. But it is better to prepare the planting hole in the fall.
  • The soil by the time of planting should be warm enough, buds should be visible on the seedling, but they should not bloom before planting in the ground.
  • For the growth and development of a cherry tree, sandy loam soil is most suitable. If the soil is heavy, clayey on the site where cherry cultivation is planned, and these soils are characterized by increased acidity, before planting a tree, it is necessary to treat the land with lime mortar, and add wood ash to the planting pit.
  • The area where the cherry will grow should be well lit by sunlight. In lowlands, where there is high humidity, cherries will not bear fruit. Constant winds also do not contribute to the yield.
  • Groundwater should be at a depth of at least 2.5 m.

When a cherry orchard is laid, the distance between the trees should be at least three meters.

Immediately after planting Radonezh cherries, a young tree needs to be watered every week, regularly loosen the soil around it and mulch it.

Advice! It is best to use humus and peat as mulch.

When the cherry tree begins to bear fruit, its subsequent care will be as follows:

  • organic fertilizers (compost or manure) are applied every 2-3 years;
  • in the fall, you need to feed the plant with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, in the spring - with nitrogen. When the cherry is in the growing season, it is fed twice with urea or ammonium nitrate;
  • as soon as the cherry blossoms, it must be watered so that the fruits set better. Watering should not be plentiful, the soil after it should not sour, it is enough to moisten it to a depth of 40-45 cm;
  • Cherries of the Radonezh variety are characterized by rapid growth of shoots, and if the shoots are not cut off in time, the berry will grow small, and the tree itself will have an unhealthy appearance. Once the length of the shoot has exceeded 50 cm, it is best to cut it off.

During harvest, the berries should be firm, well colored. If the harvest is early, the fruits will not reach the required volume and will be tasteless. Only ripe fruits can be harvested for processing. Cherries intended for transportation are best harvested three to four days before they are fully ripe.

Note! The hearths ripen unevenly, so the harvest is done in 2-3 doses.

Cherry Radonezh is widespread not only in central Russia. Summer residents of the southern regions of Western Siberia began to breed this variety on their plots. First of all, they are attracted by frost resistance. The tree can withstand temperatures down to 25 degrees. This variety has a number of other positive qualities:

  • the tree grows to medium size, and this greatly simplifies care and harvesting;
  • good taste;
  • high productivity. Its average figure is 50 centners per hectare;
  • versatility of fruits. They can be consumed fresh, as well as to prepare wines, liqueurs, compotes and jams from them;
  • immunity to stone fruit diseases, primarily such as fruit rot or moniliosis, clasterosporia and coccomycosis. Plum, cherry and sweet cherry most often suffer from these diseases;

Important! Despite the immunity, it is recommended in early spring, before bud break, to spray with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid.

The disadvantages of this variety include the difficulties that a gardener encounters when caring for a plant. The tree requires regular feeding, crown formation and additional pollination. In addition, berries of this variety are not intended for long-term storage and transportation over long distances.
