Cherries occupy one of the main places on the territory of almost any summer cottage. However, among the variety of varieties, it is difficult to choose any specific ones for planting on the territory of your garden. After all, these trees grow and bear fruit for a long time, so I want to buy varieties with high yields, good taste of berries, and besides, so that the trees are undemanding to the quality of the soil, do not need careful care.

Cherry Cherry Nochka is one of the modern varieties that meets most of these requirements.

The history of the creation of the variety

For decades, breeders have thought about improving two varieties of stone fruit trees at once: cherries and sweet cherries. Many varieties of cherries have berries that are too small and sour, and in large-fruited specimens, the berries are too watery. And in varietal varieties of sweet cherries, the berries are large, with excellent dessert taste, but these stone fruit trees have low resistance to frost, therefore, in many regions of our country they simply freeze out in too cold winters.

Cherry night

The breeders decided to breed such hybrid trees that would have excellent cold resistance from cherry trees and large tasty cherry fruits. The variety they bred was named Duke.

Interesting! For the first time such a hybrid was bred by specialists from Great Britain and was named the Duke of May. Currently, the name Duke denotes a whole galaxy of cherries, although this name is typical only for our country.

Cherry duke Nochka was bred in Ukraine, at the Artyomovsk fruit-growing station by specialist L. I. Taranenko. They were based on the cherry Valery Chkalov and the cherry variety Nord Star.

Description of cherry variety Nochka

Cherry Nochka is a wonderful hybrid of cherry and sweet cherry, which has the best qualities of these stone fruit trees. The crown of this duke is cherry, and the branchiness of the shoots is like that of cherries. In this variety, flower buds are laid during the period of seasonal shoot growth. Therefore, these cherries start blooming early.

The main trunk grows to a height of 3 m. The foliage is dark green, with a matte surface, larger than that of cherry trees. The flowers are similar to small saucers, but larger in size than those of the parent trees, collected in bunches of 7-9 pieces.

Note! The first buds appear by mid-May (if the weather is warm).

The branches are straight, the bark on them is smooth, brown in color. The buds on the shoots are similar in shape to those of cherries. Although Nochka is considered a cherry tree, most of its parameters indicate that it is more of a cherry.

Ripe berries are large, round, weighing about 6.5 g. The stone is large, heart-shaped. The pulp is juicy, with a sour-sweet taste. Delicious dark ruby juice is obtained from these fruits.

The skin is smooth, dense, the color is dark red. The pulp tastes like a cherry with a cherry aroma.

In ripe berries, the seed is easily separated from the pulp, so the harvest is easy to process.

The bones are easy to get

The night perfectly tolerates frosts down to -28-29⸰С, so the variety can be grown even in the Urals or Siberia without additional shelter for the winter. Also, this cherry is distinguished by a fairly high resistance to diseases and pest attacks.

One of the main disadvantages of this hybrid is its self-fertility. The best pollinators for Duke Nochka cherries will be the following cherry varieties: Molodezhnaya, Nord Star, Lyubskaya, Meteor.It is good to plant next to the sweet cherry variety Tenderness, which will be an excellent pollinator.

Important! The distance between this variety and the pollinating trees should be no more than 35-40 m, and no other fruit trees should be planted between them.

Characteristics of ripening of cherry berries Night: this varietal duke is referred to as medium early in terms of ripening. The berries begin to sing in the second decade of July. This tree begins to bear fruit already from the third season after planting, but the peak of fruiting occurs after the eleventh season.

The yield of the variety is average, about 10 kg of dark red berries can be harvested from one cherry. With proper harvesting, transportation will go well, and the harvested berries will lie for a long time without losing their taste and marketability.

The harvested harvest is universal, the berries are consumed fresh, and also used to make preserves or jams, juices and compotes are prepared. Also, the berries can be dried or laid in the freezer for the winter.

Planting and further care of Nochka cherries

The place for planting seedlings should be chosen in advance. The soil on the site should be slightly acidic or neutral, well fertilized. This cherivishnya loves a sunny place, protected from cold winds, so you can plant it near a fence or near the walls of a garden house.

Important! Groundwater should not come close to the surface of the earth, otherwise the tree will not grow and bear fruit well.

It is better to plant seedlings in early spring, until the buds of young trees begin to swell. The distance between adjacent trees should be at least 5.5-6 m.

It is better not to plant these cherries in autumn - a later planting (in October-early November) can lead to the fact that the tree does not have time to acclimatize before the onset of cold weather and will simply freeze out.

A couple of weeks before planting, the soil is dug up, applying organic fertilizers. The depth of the planting pit should be 0.6 m, and its diameter should be 0.6 m.

Landing pit

A layer of nutrient substrate is laid out at the bottom of the pit, which is moistened before planting the seedling. The tree is set in the center of the pit, the roots are straightened and covered with soil, which must be tamped. Then a bucket of water is brought under each tree, and on top they mulch with sawdust.

Further caring for cherries comes down to regular watering, loosening the trunks, removing weeds and applying top dressing. In the first seasons, formative pruning of shoots is carried out.

Harvesting is carried out as the berries ripen. If you intend to transport the crop over a long distance, it is better to pick the berries together with the stalks - this way the crop will better endure transportation and will be better stored.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The positive qualities of the variety include:

  • good taste of ripe berries;
  • high resistance to cold;
  • resistance to most diseases;
  • large size of ripe berries;
  • the versatility of the harvested berries;
  • early onset of fruiting - from the third season (from the moment of planting).

The variety has no serious flaws, except for self-infertility. Therefore, other pollinating stone trees are planted next to the cherry.
