Among the various varieties of plums, the Bogatyrskaya (or Bogatyr) plum is quite popular. This variety belongs to a subspecies of Domashny plum. Plum Bogatyrskaya was bred by crossing two other varieties of plum - Giant and Vengerka. Work on its breeding was carried out by R.V. and V.A.Korneev at the Lower Volga Research Institute of Agriculture. Variety trials began in 1962. In 1987, the Bogatyr plum was entered into the state register. The variety is named in this way due to the impressiveness of the fruits and their abundance.

Plum Bogatyrskaya: variety description

The trees of the heroic Plum are medium-sized (up to 3 meters high). The crown is spreading, medium thickened. The plant has a peeling gray bark. The branches of the tree branch off from the trunk at an acute angle. The size of the shoots is average. They are tinted gray-brown. The buds of the plant are cone-shaped. They are medium in size. The leaves are dark green, the bottom of the plate is lighter. The surface of the leaves is corrugated. They have long petioles with weak pubescence.

Characteristics of the fetus

The fruits of the Bogatyrskaya plum are relatively large, weighing 30-60 grams. They have a blue skin that turns black when fully ripe. The fruit has the shape of an elongated oval with a noticeable ventral seam. The surface of the fruit has a bluish waxy coating. The stem (the stem on which the fruit grows) is short and straight. The inside of the fruit contains an oval bone, which occupies 8% of the volume, and a delicate fibrous pulp of greenish-yellow color. It has a sweet and sour taste.

The fruits can be eaten fresh or processed in a variety of ways. They contain:

  • dry matter (17, 9%);
  • acids (0.56%);
  • sugar (12.66%);
  • ascorbic acid (9.63 mg / 100 grams).

Yield

The flowering period of the Bogatyrskaya plum falls on May. Plum fruits become suitable for harvest in mid-August. Plum has an average early maturity, it begins to produce an annual harvest 4 or 5 years after planting. Fruiting times can be 15 to 30 years and yields increase over time. A young tree can produce 50-60 kg of fruit. In an adult plant, the yield indicator can grow up to 80 kg.

Additional Information! Bogatyrskaya plum trees tolerate adverse conditions well. The tree is frost-resistant and can grow in regions with cold winters.

Plum Bogatyrskaya belongs to self-fertile varieties and is pollinated even in rainy weather.

The plant is resistant to many types of pests and diseases, but some can harm it. For example, drying out of the branches is a sign of the appearance of a comma-shaped scale. The appearance of dark spots on the fruit can be caused by an attack by the plum moth. Plum eurytoma causes the ovary to fall off.

Disease can also damage the drain. Marsupial disease disfigures the ovaries and contributes to the appearance of gray plaque on the fruits. Cracks with a release of gum on the trunk are formed when the plum is affected by gum leakage. Rust covers the leaves with rusty spots.

Additional Information!Bogatyrskaya is sometimes confused with another variety - Bogandinskaya plum, the description of the variety differs significantly from Bogatyrskaya.

Planting and caring for the Bogatyrskaya plum

The success of further work on growing crops depends on the correct choice of planting material. It is recommended to pick up seedlings in a nursery. The size of the plant stem should be 40-60 cm, and the height should be 1-1.4 meters.The roots should be 25-30 cm in the amount of 4-5 pieces. The trunk thickness of a good seedling is 1.2-1.3 cm. There should also be 4 or 4 branches 15-30 cm in size. To prevent the roots of the material from drying out, they need to be wrapped in a damp cloth.

Landing features

The tree should be planted where the water table is at least 1.5 meters deep. If the water lies higher, the roots of the plant will not be able to receive oxygen in the required amount. It is advisable to choose an area well lit by the sun. Also, the site must be protected from the wind. The acidity index of the soil, favorable for the growth of Bogatyrskaya plum, is 6-7 pH. If it is higher, you need to apply a fertilizer that reduces acidity, for example, ash.

Landing

On a note! You can identify soil with high acidity by the presence of sorrel, plantain, mint and heather. These plants grow well in acidic soil.

If the soil type is clayey, sand should be added to it, if it is sandy, clay should be added. Plum Bogatyrskaya should be planted in early spring, but if the weather conditions in the region are favorable, you can start planting in October.

The plant is planted in holes half a meter deep with a diameter of 80 centimeters. A peg is driven in next to the seedling to support the young tree. Before planting, the roots of the plant are pushed apart. After the seedling is placed in the hole, it is buried in earth with manure, superphosphate and salt. The neck of the rhizome should be 5 cm above the ground. A hole is made near the seedling and two buckets of water are poured. The soil is fertilized with peat.

Plant care

Plum Bogatyrskaya does not need special care. For the tree to grow well, it is enough to prune branches and water regularly. There is also no need to plant pollinating varieties. This can be done in order to increase the yield.

A young plant should be watered weekly with 2 or 3 buckets of water. As soon as the tree becomes adult, watering is carried out 5-6 times per season with 4 buckets of water. When the fruits ripen, the number of buckets is increased to eight. After each irrigation with water, the soil must be loosened.

Fertilizers begin a year after the planting of the plum. When the tree begins to bear fruit, it is fertilized three times a year:

  • urea - before the tree begins to bloom;
  • nitrofoskoy - during fruit ripening;
  • superphosphate - when the growth of the fruit ends.

At the end of the season, you can fertilize the plant with a bucket of manure. Chicken droppings are applied twice: before the flowers appear on the tree and after their formation.

Pruning time depends on how cold the spring is. The best time for this is between the end of March and the beginning of April. A young tree is pruned by shoots growing from above. When the plant is two years old, the crown is cut by a third. Branches that grow at an angle of 45 degrees are left. The intervals between them should be 20 cm. A three-year-old tree needs to form a second row, stepping back 80 cm from the previous one. The fourth is done at a distance of one and a half meters from the previous one. Subsequently, the damaged and improperly growing branches are only removed from the plant.

The fruits of the Bogatyrskaya plum develop slowly. Growth occurs from mid-August and lasts until September.

Care

Note! It is preferable to first remove the fruits from the bottom of the crown and from its outer part. To extend the shelf life, the stalk is not separated from the fruit and does not deprive it of its wax coating.

The crop can be preserved by rolling, drying and freezing.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Plum Bogatyrskaya has many positive qualities. This varietal species is famous for its good yield. The tree bears rather tasty fruits in large quantities. Those who are engaged in the cultivation of Bogatyrskaya plum expect a stable harvest every season. In addition, the fruits can withstand long-term transportation. Also, the advantages of the plant include frost resistance and immunity to many pests and diseases.

The disadvantages of this variety are the overloading of the tree with fruits, due to which the branches can break, and the crushing of the fruits over time.Obviously, the disadvantages are a consequence of the advantages of the Bogatyrskaya plum.
