Sweet cherry is a perennial stone fruit crop, which is characterized by early ripening of fruits. Therefore, gardeners are trying to plant different varieties in order to harvest these tasty sweet berries by the end of June. One of the most popular varieties is large-fruited sweet cherry. As the name suggests, its fruits can weigh up to 16-18g and the taste is sweet and delicate. The high yield of this fruit tree and other positive qualities are good reasons why it is worth growing in the garden.
How many varieties of cherries in the world
More than 80 varieties of sweet cherries are known, which differ in the shape and color of ripe fruits, as well as in taste. Many were bred by Russian breeders and zoned for cultivation in different regions of the country. But thanks to their excellent taste, sufficient unpretentiousness in growing and care, as well as good yield, seedlings of these varieties are purchased by gardeners from around the world.
Popular varieties are:
- Yulia. The sugar content in ripe fruits is up to 6%, acid - up to 2.5%. The tree bears fruit annually, but the yield is no more than 20-23 kg per plant. It belongs to late-ripening varieties, has high resistance to diseases and pests.
- Yaroslavna is characterized by a high sugar content in ripe fruits (over 14%). This figure is one of the highest among all varieties of cherry trees. Ripe fruits can hang on the tree without dropping for up to 10-12 days, the skin is not prone to cracking even during the rainy season.
- Ostrozhenka is another variety with sweet ripe berries, the sugar content of which exceeds 12.5%. The fruits are used for canning, making desserts. The harvested crop can be stored for a long time without losing marketability and taste. The main disadvantage of this cherry is its low winter hardiness. Also prone to damage by "harmful" bugs.
- Sweet cherry Talisman. The main positive qualities of the variety: large-fruited, regular fruiting, high frost resistance. The description of the sweet cherry variety Talisman says that the mass of berries is up to 10 g, the shape is heart-shaped, the pulp is rich red, the amount of sugars is 15%, acids are 5%. You can harvest from the last decade of June.
- Bryanskaya rose belongs to late crops in terms of ripening. The crown is dense, spherical, the foliage is richly emerald, the color of the flowers is milky with a white tint. Ripe berries have pink skin and yellow flesh. The trees are moderately cold resistant and highly resistant to many diseases affecting stone fruit.
- Exhibition. Fruits also ripen late, but this feature is not reflected in the taste. Large oval-shaped berries are creamy with reddish sides. The seeds are small in size, well separated from ripe pulp.
The largest cherry: description and characteristics of this variety
Sweet cherry (variety Large-fruited) was bred by Ukrainian breeders. They pollinated the Napoleon Bely variety with pollen from Zhabule and Valery Chkalov. The new hybrid culture at the genetic level received all the positive qualities from the "parents": large berry sizes, wonderful taste. The variety has been tested since 1973, and entered the State Register 13 years later.
For Krupnoplodnaya cherry, further description is reduced to a story about the main characteristics of this culture.
This bush can reach a height of no more than 5 m. In order to restrain further crop growth, experts recommend carrying out formative pruning of branches. The main branches of the skeleton are rough, but they are highly durable. The crown has the shape of a ball, its thickening is slightly higher than average.
The foliage is large, slightly elongated, the ends are pointed. Its color is bright emerald. The flower size is more than average, the petals are boiling white.
Although large black cherry is a hybrid, the flowers are highly sterile. Therefore, trees with the same flowering time should be planted next to the large-fruited cherry for better pollination.
Suitable varieties are:
- Surprise;
- Bigarro of Oratovsky;
- Dyber Black;
- Francis.
In the Big cherry, the first crop is harvested already in the fourth season from the moment the young tree is planted in a permanent place. The average weight of the berries is about 12 g, but there are fruits with a weight of 17 g. The thickness of the skin is below average, when eaten it is not felt, dense, but during a period of high humidity it can crack. The berries are deep red and the flesh is burgundy. Dessert sweet taste of berries is another indisputable advantage of large black cherries. Experts noted such taste qualities with a high tasting score of 4.5 points.
Fruiting of this cherry is regular, even in rainy and unfavorable climatic conditions of the year, more than 55 kg of harvest can be harvested from one tree. The commercial quality of the berries is high, so many gardeners plant this stone fruit crop for the further sale of the ripening crop. The harvested crop is versatile, the fruits can be used fresh, make jams or jellies.
Cherry Krupnaya is famous for the following advantages:
- the harvested crop tolerates transportation well, without losing its presentation and taste;
- yield is consistently high, annual;
- ripe berries are large;
- high resistance to bacterial cancer.
The main disadvantages of this variety:
- the variety is self-fertile, so pollinating trees should be planted nearby;
- in rainy years, the berries can crack.
Description of varieties of black cherry large-fruited
- One of the main varieties with black fruits is the late-ripening Napoleon variety. This is a tall tree with a spherical crown. Fruits are large, slightly elongated, dark ruby color, almost black. The pulp is firm, the thickness of the skin is more than average. Sweet fruits with a slight sourness have a dessert taste and a barely perceptible fruity aroma. Ripe berries tolerate transportation well over long distances without losing their presentation and good taste. The shelf life of the harvested crop in the refrigerator is 10-12 days. Sweet cherry Napoleon is highly resistant to many diseases.
- Regina belongs to the late varieties, reaches a height of 2.5-3 m, begins bearing fruit 3 years after planting in a permanent place. Large fruits are dark red, almost black in color, have a pleasant taste. When ripe, they can hang on branches for a long time without crumbling or cracking. This fruit tree can withstand frosts down to -21-23 ° C.
Sweet cherry pollinators
Unfortunately, many varieties of cherries are characterized by medium sterility, therefore, next to them (at a distance of 4-4.5 m) other pollinating varieties are planted, due to which the yield of self-fertile cherries increases sharply. How many pollinators to plant depends on the desire of the gardener himself (but not less than one).
But it is better not to use cherries for pollination of cherries, since there is no particular sense from this. The only exception is the cherry variety Lyubskaya, which is self-pollinated, therefore it is suitable as a pollinator for other cherry varieties and sweet cherries.
Experienced gardening tips
Experienced gardeners recommend planting cherries in the spring, as trees planted in autumn can freeze out in cold winters. Spring planting dates may vary (depending on the growing region). You need to prepare a planting site after the snow melts and the soil warms up well, but before the buds begin to bloom on the trees. In this case, cherry seedlings acclimatize faster in a new place and grow faster.
The soil should be loose and fertile. If the land is severely depleted, then mineral fertilizers are introduced into it for the autumn digging, and in the spring complex mineral fertilizers are added to the planting pits.
Planting cherry seedlings does not differ from planting other fruit trees. It should be remembered that the root collar of the tree should not be buried in the ground.
Further care of young trees includes:
- compliance with the irrigation regime;
- correct application of dressings;
- compliance with agrotechnical measures to prepare a tree for wintering;
- carrying out formative and sanitary pruning in accordance with all the rules.
Watering cherries is carried out once every 30 days, the rate of water application is no more than 40 liters for each tree.
If the soil was sufficiently fertilized before planting the trees, then in the first 2-3 seasons it is possible not to apply fertilizer under the cherries. In the future, in the spring, top dressing is introduced containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. During the summer and autumn, this variety needs potash and phosphate fertilizers.
As you can see from the article, there is nothing difficult in growing large cherries. The main thing is to choose a suitable variety and in the future follow all the rules of agricultural technology. And then there will be so much harvest that there will be nowhere to put it!
