Not so often in the northern garden you can find a winter apple variety, which has sweet and juicy fruits. It is believed that only summer and southern varieties have a sweet taste. The apple-tree Belorusskoe sweet will allow breaking such stereotypes. The harvest of real winter apples can be stored until mid-winter, they are free of acidity and hardness.
Description of the apple-tree Belarusian sweet
This apple variety has always been popular both in the breeding area and among gardeners from neighboring countries. The achievements of Belarusian breeders are represented by high-quality varieties with improved varietal characteristics, ideal for growing in temperate climates. One of the most outstanding achievements is the late-ripening apple-tree of the Belorusskoe Sweet variety.
The variety was bred in the late 90s (variety trials began in 1999). If we take into account all the Belarusian varieties of late-ripening apple trees, it is the Belarusian sweet that is the best, and breeders assure that any region of the country is suitable for its cultivation.
In terms of ripening, this species is included in the group of late winter varieties, but in the southern regions and during the hot summer, the crop can ripen 2 weeks earlier. In this case, the apple tree is considered early. You can pick apples from the branches in the second half of October.
If you follow the terms and rules of collection, fruits will be stored until mid-winter.
This variety is distinguished by its early maturity. An ordinary seedling begins to bear fruit after 3 years after it has been planted, and if the seedlings were grafted, the tree bears fruit already in the first year after planting. Fruiting is continuous from season to season. The only exceptions are difficult weather conditions in the form of rains, prolonged or sudden frosts during the period of active flowering of trees.
The yield of the Belarusian sweet is quite high: a five-year-old tree is capable of producing up to 40 kg of apples, which is a good indicator, given the small dimensions, reaching 3 m in height. The variety has phenomenal frost resistance - the tree is able to withstand temperatures up to 35 degrees below zero. The tree has a high immunity to fungal diseases, which makes it easier to care for growing trees. They can be grown both in industrial gardens and on a personal plot.
Characteristics and features of the variety
Intensive growth is not typical for the Belarusian sweet apple tree. At the age of 8 years, the tree can reach only 3 meters in height, and the crown is sparse, with a rounded-conical shape. The branches of the seedlings are drooping, which is a certain advantage - this makes it easier to care for the tree and collect the ripe crop.
The severity of the fruit explains the presence of flexible and slender shoots. The bark of the tree has a smooth texture and a light brown color. The branches are covered with large and slightly concave leaves, the central part of them is wrinkled, along the edges there are slight notches. The shade of the foliage is rich and green. The active flowering period is accompanied by the appearance of large white flowers with a crimson heart, which attracts many views.
Experts identify several main characteristics of the Belarusian sweet, namely:
- large fruits: on the lower tier, the weight of one apple reaches 200 g, and on the upper tier - 250 g;
- smooth surface of apples, rounded, regular and smooth;
- removable maturity is accompanied by a greenish skin, and most of the fruit has a thick blush;
- the ripe fruit has white flesh, which has a pleasant sweet taste and persistent odor.
It is worth noting that when fully ripe, the peel of the apple acquires a yellowish tint, a continuous crimson blush appears on it, as well as a slight slimy coating.
Features of planting and care
Having decided to grow a variety of Belarusian sweet apple, you need to know the peculiarities of not only planting, but also caring for the tree. Only under this condition can a healthy tree be grown and receive regular impressive yields.
For planting seedlings, you need to choose early autumn, it is advisable to manage it a month before the expected frost occurs. You can also plant trees in early spring, but you must definitely wait until the ground thaws. If the saplings have not yet begun to move and the buds have not swollen, you can safely plant the trees in open ground.
For planting, you will need a spacious pit, which should be prepared a couple of weeks before the planned disembarkation. The size of the planting pit is usually 1 square meter, and it should be at least 1 m deep.
Using a complex mineral fertilizer, rotted manure and wood ash, prepare a mixture that will fertilize the planting pit. Part of the earth that was removed from the hole must be sprinkled with a hole so that half of the depth is covered with a mound. Be sure to install a wooden stake in the center in order to tie a young tree to it. Place the seedling on a mound, spread its root system and cover it with clean soil, without using any fertilizers.
In the first year of growth and development of apple seedlings, they need to be surrounded with increased care and special attention. Apple tree care consists of several stages:
- water the tree abundantly every month, and if the weather is dry, water it once every three weeks;
- mulch the space near the trunk, due to which moisture is retained, the soil is structured and saturated with air;
- in winter, cover the trunk of a tree using spruce cane or rags, tie them up with the top to the bottom.
Mature apple trees need three times feeding, regular loosening and weeding, and mulching. Periodically, you need to make sanitary and formative pruning, maintain immunity and water at least 4 times throughout the season.
In order for a tree to grow and develop, as well as to bear fruit regularly, you need to resort to timely feeding. Organic and mineral fertilizers are often used. It is recommended to use liquid and nitrogen fertilizers in spring, and after the tree stops flowering - mineral complexes with potassium, calcium and nitrogen components.
After the tree has successfully passed the first wintering, you can safely form the crown of a young seedling. The crown of the tree is formed by pruning throughout the growing season of the apple tree. With the onset of early spring, gardeners begin formative and sanitary pruning, which removes branches that look damaged, frostbitten or dried out.
Disadvantages and advantages of the variety
Each fruit tree has a specific list of advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages of the Belarusian sweet apple tree include the fact that not everyone will like the taste of this variety. Also, under certain conditions, apples have a shorter shelf life.
