Cucumber Carolina is included in the lists of the state register of Russia. According to the description, the garden crop is intended for cultivation in greenhouse conditions. Most of the planting material is produced in America by Lark Seeds. In Russia, amateur vegetable growers in the southern regions of the country get a good harvest by growing this variety of cucumbers in the open field.
Description
Carolina is an early variety of cucumbers, 43-47 days pass from the moment the first shoots appear to the harvest. This culture belongs to parthenocarpic type hybrids. The plant can bear fruit without insect pollination; with this form of ovary formation, there are no seeds in the fruits.
The plant has the following characteristics and features:
- fruits of the gherkin type, have an actively expressed dark green color;
- zelentsy have an aesthetic appearance, their parameters are unchanged, since cucumbers are not prone to deformation and overgrowth;
- fruits are formed on lateral branches, in bundles from 3 to 5 pieces;
- the size of a mature fruit ranges from 12 to 14 cm;
- the taste of Zelentsov is completely devoid of bitterness;
- the variety has a stable immunity to common plant diseases (cucumber mosaic virus, powdery mildew, etc.);
- the root system and the main stem of plants are very powerful;
- the stem is woven like a liana and forms a large number of small lateral branches;
- the hybrid bears excellent fruit, from 1 sq. m can be harvested up to 12 kg.
The main feature of the variety is its ability to withstand the stressful conditions of hot climates. Despite the fact that the hybrid is declared as a plant intended for cultivation in greenhouse conditions, it grows well in open beds in the southern regions of Russia.
The Carolina hybrid is similar in qualities to the early Karakor f1 cucumber. The description of the latter suggests that it is suitable for growing in greenhouses and open beds in the southern regions.
Care features
Carolina F1 is a garden crop that is capable of producing a high yield with good care.
Sowing seeds for seedlings
Agronomists advise sowing planting material in peat pots or glasses. The containers are filled with a soil mixture containing:
- peat,
- turf,
- ash.
Specialty stores sell a wide variety of nutrient-enriched pre-made soils. The soil mixture is well moistened, then a small depression should be made in the center of the pot. The seeds are laid horizontally to a depth of no more than one centimeter and covered with earth.
After that, the crops are watered with a solution of potassium humate and covered with plastic wrap. As needed, soil in pots is watered with a sprayer.
The temperature in the room where the seedling pots are located should be at least 27 degrees. Lamps can be installed above the container with crops. Under such conditions, the first shoots will appear already on the third day after sowing. After that, the film must be removed.
The remains of the crusts from the seeds from the cotyledons cannot be removed by hand. Watering the seedlings can only be done with a spray bottle.
After the appearance of the first leaves, the seedlings are treated with a solution of the chemical agent Previkur, then after about a week the plants are treated with Pharmayod.After another week, young cucumber shoots are sprayed with Fitosporin-M protective agent.
The solutions are diluted according to the directions of the instructions supplied with the chemicals.
Planting seedlings
Seedlings are planted in a greenhouse or open bed at the age of 22 to 25 days. Or after the appearance of the first three healthy leaves. Cucumbers of this variety can be planted in the ground from April to July, depending on when the harvest is expected.
If the seedlings were grown in peat pots, they are simply transferred along with the container to the place of constant growth. This method allows you to protect the plant's root system from damage.
Plants are planted as follows:
- holes are prepared in a greenhouse or on an open bed;
- a string is hung over each dug hole, one end of which is buried together with the pot, and its second free end is attached under the roof of the greenhouse;
- before planting plants, spray the entire garden bed, supports, paths with a protective solution of the Pharmayod product from a spray bottle;
- a Glyocladin tablet is placed in each well, it is covered with a thin earthen layer;
- the wells are poured with warm water and then peat pots with seedlings are placed in them;
- the free lower end of the twine is placed under the plant and covered with earth, or hidden under a peat pot;
- daily under each root pour from 500 ml to 1 liter of clean warm water.
Plant care
A week after the plants are transferred to the place of permanent growth, they need to be treated with the chemical Previkur.
Then, after another week, the cucumbers should be sprayed with chemicals high in copper, such as:
- Abiga Peak,
- Oxyhom,
- Kurzat.
7 days after this treatment, the plants are fed with drugs, the action of which is aimed at the development of the root system.
Protection from diseases and pests must be provided as threats emerge. In other words, a certain chemical agent is used upon the appearance of several individuals of harmful insects on the garden bed. Protective chemicals are sprayed in the evening.
The beds are constantly cleared of weeds. Watering and feeding is carried out according to the standard scheme, taking into account the air temperature and plant growth.
Agronomists do not recommend watering cucumbers growing in a greenhouse in the evening and at night. Scourges growing in open beds, on the contrary, are best watered when the daytime heat subsides.
If the cucumbers are industrially grown, soil analysis should be done regularly. If the soil lacks the necessary nutrients, cucumbers are capable of dropping up to half of the ovaries within a few days.
For feeding, you can use not only root fertilizers, but also leaf fertilizers. It is recommended to apply foliar dressing in the morning, by spraying.
The harvest for sale is harvested in the early morning hours. If you pick cucumbers during the day, they will quickly lose their presentation.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Benefits:
- Carolina cucumber is suitable for industrial cultivation due to its positive properties, such as excellent taste and good appearance of the fruit;
- early hybrids, such as Carolina and Karakor, are good because they can be planted in the ground twice a season for spring-summer and summer-autumn consumption;
- the hybrid has a good yield;
- cucumbers can be stored for a long time and perfectly tolerate long-distance transportation;
- the hybrid has a stable immunity to common plant diseases (powdery mildew, peronosporosis, etc.);
- the fruits of this garden culture do not outgrow and do not deform;
- the taste of Zelentsov is completely devoid of bitterness;
- fruits are suitable for eating and preserving.
The housewives like the variety for its taste and the fact that these cucumbers can be preserved in all known ways.
Carolina is a cucumber variety with almost no flaws. They do not require any specific care and easily tolerate short-term temperature drops. Gardeners and farmers who have had experience with growing this hybrid speak only positively about it.
