Columnar apple trees have recently been increasingly found in garden plots. They are compact in size, but at the same time delight gardeners with an excellent harvest. A fairly popular variety of such crops is the Malukha apple tree.
History of creation
Columnar apple trees appeared in the 60s. of the past century. The place of their appearance is Canada. The history of the variety began with the fact that one amateur gardener saw an apple tree with an unusual mutation on his plot. She had no lateral branches, and apples were all over her trunk. From it, breeders bred the Vazhak apple tree, which became the progenitor of a number of columnar varieties, including Malyukha.
The Malukha apple tree is a dwarf tree obtained by crossing fruit and ornamental varieties. The apple tree columnar Malyukha is excellent for cultivation, both in central Russia and in the Urals.
Description
Due to its compact size and attractive appearance, crop cultivation is often done for landscaping purposes. It looks like a graceful column with a neat crown. The distribution of fruits occurs evenly throughout the trunk.
Malukha's apple belongs to the late ripeness varieties. Fruiting begins in September. The variety is fast-growing. Already in the first year of a plant's life, you can harvest. True, it will only make up a few apples. Experts recommend cutting off all flowers of the first bloom. This will give the plant an opportunity to strengthen and root better. The first full-fledged harvest can take place no earlier than in 4 years. And after five years, according to such a culture as the Maluha columnar apple tree, the description, the yield will be at least 12-15 kg from one small tree.
The fruits of the culture have a yellow-green hue with a coral blush. The apples themselves are a little elongated. Varietal fruit weighs an average of 250 grams. Apples have a delicate taste and honey aroma.
The apple tree pollinator is not required as the variety belongs to the self-pollinated varieties.
Many domestic and foreign gardeners prefer this particular variety of columnar apple trees.
Features of agricultural technology
Planting the Maluha variety is no different from a similar procedure performed with other varieties of columnar apple trees. Since planting a culture is not particularly difficult, even a novice gardener can easily cope with the task.
This is done approximately as follows. The acquired planting material is placed in a previously dug hole with parameters 50x50 cm, tied to a peg and covered with earth mixed with fertilizer. Plants should be planted very carefully, trying not to harm the roots in any way.
After the planting of the Maluha variety in open ground is completed, it will be necessary to provide the culture with proper care. Only in this case can you expect to get a good harvest. Particularly accurate adherence to agrotechnical measures is important in the first years of a plant's life.
Watering
Watering Maluha needs moderate. If the variety grows on light enough soil, it will need to be moistened about once every two weeks. But here it is necessary to take into account other factors: the climatic features of the planting region and the weather conditions of a particular season. So, for example, if the summer is too hot, the number of waterings increases proportionately. The ground should be slightly moist to a depth of 5 centimeters.
Top dressing
In the first year of growth of the Malukha apple tree, the plant is necessarily fed with nitroammophos at the rate of 50 grams of composition per plant. A month after the procedure, the young apple tree should be fertilized in the same way again. Alternatively, you can apply a solution of carbamide in a ratio of 2 tablespoons of the drug to 10 liters of settled water. The third feeding is carried out in another month. You can also use a nitroammophoska or urea solution.
Disease and pest control
Despite the fact that the Maluha columnar apple tree has a fairly high indicator of resistance to diseases and pests, preventive measures should be carried out annually. Usually, for this purpose, the crop is treated in spring and autumn with any relatively safe insecticides and fungicides. The most important thing is to do this before the buds swell in the spring and after harvesting in the fall.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like most other fruit crops, the Malyukha variety has both certain advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the variety include the following significant points:
- due to the compactness of the tree, caring for it will not be particularly difficult (just like harvesting);
- trees can be planted quite tightly due to the lack of side branches and a spreading crown;
- the fruits are held very tightly on the branches and do not fall off even if you start shaking the tree;
- the apple variety has a beautiful and aesthetic appearance;
- the culture is fast-growing;
- the variety is best suited for planting in regions with not the most favorable climatic conditions;
- with proper storage, apples can be preserved without losing their commercial characteristics until December;
- The baby is highly immune to scab and most other diseases.
There are not many disadvantages of the variety. As a rule, most gardeners focus their attention on just two points. We are talking about too high cost of seedlings of a columnar plant and not too long fruiting period.
If we talk about the variety as a whole, it should be noted that the number of advantages clearly outweighs the existing disadvantages. Therefore, choosing the Malukh apple tree for planting in your garden will be the right decision, the adoption of which will not have to be regretted.
