Sea buckthorn has long since become a home crop. Gardeners fell in love with this tree for the taste and benefits of the fruit.
Description of culture
Sea buckthorn is a representative of the class of dioecious plants, which means that it can be a male or a female plant (two or more bushes must be planted). This culture has medicinal properties. Berries contain many vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, P, K), the leaves are also useful. For a child, this is a wonderful berry that combines high taste and benefits. Sea buckthorn oil is popular in the treatment of many diseases.
The culture is photophilous, frost-resistant, wind-pollinated, loves moist, but not swampy soils.
How sea buckthorn reproduces
There are several ways to breed a plant:
- seedlings;
- undergrowth;
- seeds;
- layering;
- also sea buckthorn can be cuttings.
Saplings
The easiest way, especially for novice gardeners. Planting should only be done in the spring. It is important to carefully choose the planting material, here are some important points:
- choose only a proven nursery, do not buy seedlings from unverified people;
- the bark should be elastic, not brown, well attached to the tree;
- buy several seedlings, for example 3 girls and one boy for pollination.
Trees need to be planted before bud break. The plant is planted in a hole on a mound, the roots are straightened and covered with a composition (earth from the site, organic matter, sand in equal parts) with the addition of superphosphate (200 g). Make a small depression around the planted plant and pour with two buckets of water. After a year, in spring, each bush should be fed with urea (20-30 g per bucket of water). Top dressing is carried out every 4 years. In drought, abundant watering is necessary.
How to propagate sea buckthorn by shoots
This is the fastest way. When the offspring appears, it must be spud and watered. In the spring, gently rake the mound with your hands to the roots of the main bush. With a knife, horizontally cut off the offspring from the root system. Plant the shoots in a pre-prepared hole (it was already indicated above how to make a hole). Further care consists in regular watering and feeding every 3-4 years.
The advantage of this method is its speed, it is difficult to highlight the disadvantages.
How to propagate sea buckthorn with green cuttings
Cutting of sea buckthorn in summer is carried out in June. Reproduction of sea buckthorn by cuttings in spring is impossible in this case. Early in the morning, you need to cut off the shoots (20 cm), which had time to woody, then cut them into 5 cm pieces. Make an incision over the bud with a sharp blade, remove the lower leaves. Gather the cuttings together and place in water.
Before planting, you need to develop a site. Dig it up, mix the earth with sand and peat in proportions 1: 1: 1. Pour a 3 cm layer of sand on top of the plot. Before planting, it is good to shed the bed. Cuttings deepen by 2-4 cm. It is necessary to plant cuttings 5 cm apart, water the soil again.
Pull the film over the planting arcs, leave a space of 3 cm up to the cuttings so that the film does not touch the cuttings. Do not forget to press the edges of the film so that the wind does not blow it.
Under the film at a temperature of + 25 ° C, ideal conditions are created for the strengthening and growth of the plant.
- After 20 days, most of the cuttings are rooted.
- They need careful care: weeding, loosening, watering, feeding (20 g of ammonium nitrate per 10 liters of water).
- 4 weeks after planting, the plant needs to be hardened, for this you need to open the film and air the bushes.
Before cold weather, the bushes need to be covered with sawdust, leaves. In the spring, dive into a place prepared in advance for growing. Leave 30 cm between the rows, and 15 cm between the bushes. After planting, water abundantly.
The advantage of this method is its high survival rate, and the disadvantage is that the process is labor-intensive and is more suitable for experienced gardeners.
Breeding sea buckthorn woody cuttings
In late November - early December, cut annual shoots from five-year-old bushes. Cutting sea buckthorn in spring is also possible; March is suitable for this. Store shoots in a cool room or under a snow cover at temperatures from 0 to + 2 ° C.
In early spring, cut the shoots into 15 cm cuttings, put them in water for 3 days. Then plant it on the garden bed, leaving three buds at the top, spill the soil. During the first three weeks, watering is required 2-3 times a day. These rules will help you get a bush with strong roots and foliage by autumn.
How to breed sea buckthorn seeds
It is worth remembering that when a plant is grown from seeds, varietal traits disappear, the culture becomes similar to bushes grown in the wild (many thorns, small berries).
The beginning of autumn is suitable for planting seeds. Prepare the soil, mix the top layer of soil with coarse sand and fertilizer. Make grooves (width and depth 2-3 cm) at intervals of 20 cm from each other. Tamp the soil into the grooves, stock up on organic fertilizer in advance. During persistent frosts, dig out the planting site from the snow cover, plant the seeds in the prepared grooves with an interval of 2 cm from each other, cover with organic matter (1 cm layer).
Seeds can also be planted in spring. This is done according to the following scheme:
- soak the seeds in water for 5 days;
- plant germinated seeds in grooves to a depth of 5 cm;
Two-year-old seedlings are planted in a permanent place, provide care. The main disadvantage of this technique is that varietal characteristics are not preserved.
Reproduction of sea buckthorn by layering
This method requires a young tree with bendable stems. Choose a good twig, tilt it to the ground and sprinkle it with earth. You can put light oppression on a twig, then water this place well. It is best to do jigging layering in the spring. The plant with roots is separated from the parent branch and transplanted to a permanent place.
The advantage of this method is the good rooting of the layer. There is only one drawback - few shoots.
The main mistakes when breeding culture
Errors when breeding this bush:
- the wrong choice of a site for a culture, the place should be sunny, humid, but not swampy;
- the wrong choice of method in the absence of experience, you should begin to study methods from simple to complex;
- pay insufficient attention to watering, in drought it is especially necessary;
- the wrong choice of season for breeding (for each reception its own time).
It is worth remembering that the main care after breeding is regular watering and feeding every 3-4 years. It is undesirable to loosen an adult plant, since there is a danger of damaging the rhizome. You can loosen plants that have not had time to acquire impressive roots, but this must be done very carefully and shallowly.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that gardeners will always start a debate about the effectiveness of each method of breeding sea buckthorn. Therefore, novice gardeners should choose a breeding method based on their experience and capabilities.
