When developing new varieties of pears, breeders strive to enhance their best qualities, taking into account natural data and the climatic zone. Pear Rogneda is one of the best results of such work, in which seven scientists from the Timiryazev Agricultural University K.A.
Variety creation
Rogneda means “born to rule”. This name corresponds to a kind of pear. The Polotsk princess had the same name, who had a strong uncommon character. Apparently, this is the meaning that experienced breeders put into the name of this hardy variety. The Rogneda pear is endowed with many good qualities. They got her from two famous varieties: Forest Beauty and Tyoma.
The task of Russian breeders to create a fruitful pear variety that easily takes root in cold latitudes was fulfilled with flying colors. Scientists brought it out relatively recently. The beginning of the State tests of the variety took place in 1997; it was included in the State Register of the Central Region of Russia in 2001. To date, Rogneda has shown itself to be the best variety in central Russia.
Characteristic features of the Rogned pear
Pear fruits have a rounded shape with a shiny surface, their color is light yellow, with a slight reddish blush. Small dots are observed under the skin of medium thickness.
Juicy, light pulp of medium density has a sweet taste and exudes a nutmeg aroma. The acid content in the fruits is very low - only 0.15% in 100 g. In terms of visual appeal and taste, the slightly granular Rogneda fruits are estimated at 4.2 points. The weight of most of the fruits is 120-130 g.
The pear tree reaches a height of 4 m. It is classified as a medium-sized variety with a compact crown, which is round or oval in shape. The crown is not thickened with weak shoots, well ventilated. The main flower buds are located on young, ringed shoots. The edges of the ovoid leaves have small denticles. Pear flowers tolerate spring temperature changes well. The Rogneda tree begins to bear fruit 3-4 years after planting the seedling. An adult plant bears 50-100 kg of sweet fruits. Pears begin to ripen from mid-August.
The main advantages and disadvantages of Rogneda
When describing the Rogned pear, one cannot fail to mention its best qualities.
The advantages of the variety include:
- Early maturity (after planting in the ground, the seedling bears fruit in 3-4 years).
- High resistance to diseases such as scab and fruit rot.
- Abundant fruiting (50-100 kg per tree).
- Good winter hardiness.
- Excellent taste of the fruit.
- Self-fertility of the tree (no additional trees are needed to set fruit).
The main disadvantage is:
- high crumbling of fruits during ripening;
- dim fruit color;
- the frequency of fruiting.
Planting and care rules
The basic rules for growing and caring for Rogned pears differ little from the general rules for caring for most pears. When choosing a planting site, gardeners need to consider her love of sunlight.
Neighboring pears will improve the quality of the fruit and increase the yield. The main thing is that these trees have flowering periods similar to those of Rogneda.
You can plant seedlings in spring and autumn. A pit is prepared for this in advance, at the same time enriching the soil. For autumn planting, the pit must be prepared in a month, for spring planting - in the fall. The dimensions of the pit are 1 m wide and 0.7 m deep.
For the soil mixture, part of the removed top layer of the earth is mixed with manure (30 kg), saltpeter (80 g) and potassium sulfate (150 g). After filling the hole with a half prepared mixture, put the seedling in the middle of the hole, straighten the roots and then sprinkle with the rest of the mixture. The root collar is left 6-7 cm above the planting level. The soil is tamped around the trunk. Tied to an established support. To reduce moisture loss, part of the leaves of the seedling is removed. After abundant watering of the tree, the trunk circle can be mulched with peat.
One of the important points of good fruiting of a pear is cutting off the crown in order to form it. This operation is carried out in the spring, before the start of sap flow (in April). It is performed for the first 4 years after disembarkation:
- After a year, the plant is pruned to ¼ of the height.
- In the second year, a central core and 3-4 strong branches are left for the first tier. These branches are cut to ⅓ of their height, and the central conductor to such a height that it protrudes 20 cm higher than them. The places of the cuts must be treated with garden pitch.
- In the spring of the third year, the central conductor is cut by 20 cm. A pair of strong branches is leveled in height, retreating 50-70 cm from the lower tier.
- In the spring of 4 years, the second central branch is laid. It will be 40 cm higher than the last tier. All other competing branches are removed.
During the summer-autumn period, sanitary pruning is carried out if necessary (to thin out the crown, remove diseased or broken branches). At a more mature age, pears are pruned mainly for the purpose of rejuvenation and increasing its yield.
In the first year of life, a pear seedling does not need to be watered with fertilizers, because it was planted in enriched soil. In subsequent years, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the soil, and, if necessary, apply the required fertilizers.
An important aspect of crop care is considered to be the procedure for whitewashing the tree trunk in spring and autumn. It will protect the bark of the tree from spring burns, winter frosts and help from diseases and pests.
To cope with the problems, the following drugs will be required:
- Rust is treated with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid before bud break, after flowering, then after another 2 weeks. In the fall, after leaf fall, the tree and fallen leaves are sprayed with a 5% carbamide solution.
- With pear honeydew, in the spring, apply karbofos before bud break in a proportion of 90 g per 10 liters of water.
- From the gall mite, the tree is treated with colloidal sulfur in a proportion of 100 g per 10 liters of water three times: before bud break, after flowering and in mid-summer.
- When the hawthorn overpowers and the caterpillars destroy the buds, flowers and leaves, they are treated with a solution of karbofos according to the instructions before flowering.
Thanks to its excellent winter hardiness, gardeners can grow the Rogned pear not only in the southern regions of Russia, but also in the northern latitudes. The main thing is to observe the correct agricultural techniques and take into account the characteristics of the variety. And there are many options for preparing dishes from its amazing fruits - it's all a matter of taste.
