Few varieties can "boast" of high productivity, excellent taste, large-fruited and frost resistance. One of them is the Ovstuzhenka cherry. In addition, the variety is semi-fertile, therefore, at least 10% of the flowers will tie on their own. Thus, the gardener will definitely not be left without a crop!

History and description of the variety

The variety was bred at the All-Russian Research Institute of Lupin by the breeder M.V. Kanshina. Ovstuzhenka was obtained as a result of crossing the varieties Compact Venyaminova and Leningradskaya Black and entered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 2001. Today it is recommended for zoning in the Central Region.

Important! The properties of Ovstuzhenka cherries make it possible to grow them even in very severe frosts (up to -45 ° C).

In addition to resistance to frost, the variety is characterized by almost complete immunity to diseases such as moniliosis and coccomycosis, and moderate resistance to clasterosporium. However, in any case, preventive and protective measures will be necessary.

Sweet cherries are good for strengthening the cardiovascular system. The composition of the berry includes a multivitamin complex that compensates for the lack of nutrients in the human body.

Features of cherries Ovstuzhenka

The tree is short, fast-growing, dense crown has a spherical shape. During the first 4-5 years, the growth of the tree rushes upward until it begins to bear fruit. The height of the cherry makes it easy to pick the fruit and take care of the tree. The kidneys are large, pointed, conical. The ovate leaves are light green, bordered by frequent, small denticles, have a strongly pointed apex, a rounded base, a flat blade and a short petiole. The leaf thickness is average. The inflorescence consists of 3 large flowers with saucer-shaped corollas. The petals are superimposed on one another, the top of the pistil is at the same level with the stamens (sometimes higher), the cup is in the shape of a glass, the sepals are devoid of denticles, pigmented.

Cherry variety Ovstuzhenka, appearance

The average fruit weight is 4.2 g, the maximum indicators reach 6.7 g. The shape of the fruit is round, the color of the skin, pulp and juice is dark red. The stalk is easily detached from a ripe berry. The color of the stone is light brown, the shape is ovoid, the weight is 0.27 g, which is slightly more than 6% of the weight of the fruit. The berries are beautiful, juicy, sweet. The taste of the fruit is rated at 4.2 points. They contain sugar, ascorbic and other acids. The berries have a universal purpose, they do not crack.

Sweet cherry Ovstuzhenka is one of the early varieties. The beginning of fruiting occurs at 4 or 5 years. Most of the berries appear on bouquet branches. As a result of self-pollination, up to 5% of cherries are tied. The best pollinators for Ovstuzhenka are Raditsa, Iput, Revna, Tyutchevka. If there are these varieties next to the sweet cherry, the yield from one tree can reach 30 kg. On average, the yield of Ovstuzhenka is 102 (maximum 206) centners per hectare.

Important! According to the description of the cherry variety Ovstuzhenka, the flowering of the fruit tree begins in mid-May, and at the end of June it is already possible to harvest. In warmer conditions, fruiting occurs in the middle of the month, in the Trans-Urals, on the contrary, later - in July.

Growing and care

To plant a tree, you will need a southern slope that is accessible to the sun's rays.The soil should be fertile and the groundwater should be low. The seedling must be positioned so that the neck is underground. Trees should be at a distance of 3-5 m from each other. The best time to plant is early fall. In September - mid-October, the air and soil are still warm enough. If the climate in the region is cold, then the seedling is rooted in the spring. Branches growing at a height of up to 1 m must be removed. Thanks to this, the tree will form a crown faster.

Despite the numerous positive characteristics of the Ovstuzhenka cherry variety, they will all lose their significance if the summer resident does not take care of proper care of the fruit tree. Events of this kind include:

  • watering;
  • soil mulching;
  • shelter of the trunk circle before wintering;
  • autumn whitewashing of a tree trunk;
  • fertilizing the soil;
  • pruning branches.

Thanks to these actions, the guarantee of active growth, high productivity and protection of Ovstuzhenka from diseases, pests and frost cracks will increase.

It is necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the trunk circle and regularly water the seedlings. The nature of watering should not be very abundant so that young trees do not drown in the mud. The loosening and light composition of the soil will allow the roots to breathe freely.

In general, the agricultural technology of Ovstuzhenka cherries does not differ from the rules of planting and caring for other varieties. In all cases, pruning is needed to form the crown, fertilizing with fertilizers, as well as spraying for the purpose of disinfection from parasites and diseases.

Pruning for crown formation

One adult tree occupies at least 20 m² of land. The best fertilizer for Ovstuzhenka is horse manure. They add it to the fruit pit in the autumn season. In spring, cherries need nitrogen-containing fertilizers, which contribute to the faster growth of the fruit tree. As such, urea is perfect, which must be scattered in the area of the trunk circle. After fruiting, the period of preparation for winter begins. In July-August, Ovstuzhenka is fed with potassium sulfate and superphosphate.

The formation of the crown and skeletal branches of a fruit tree takes at least 4 years, after which a thinning, shortening and sanitary pruning of the branches is done.

  • Sanitary pruning is the removal of damaged, dried, frozen branches and branches affected by diseases. To avoid spreading the disease throughout the tree, part of the healthy branch is also pruned.
  • With thinning pruning, branches are removed that shade others, as well as those growing down and inside the crown. As a result, the crown becomes more transparent, access of the sun and air to the bark of the fruit tree opens, thereby reducing the likelihood of the appearance of moss.
  • Shortening pruning is needed to form the crown and limit the growth of branches. This is done to stimulate the development of the main shoots, their greater branching. As a result, fresh buds are formed on them. This type of pruning is done on young trees, as well as in case of frost damage to the crown.

Preventive treatment with copper sulfate and nitrophen will help protect trees from fungal diseases. You also need to spray trees with solutions from parasites and pests. In order to prevent gum removal and other negative manifestations, you need to monitor the cleanliness of the trunk circle, and plant honey plants and green fertilizers next to the cherry. As a result of their mowing, mulch is formed, which feeds the earth with useful substances of natural origin.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Among the advantages of sweet cherry Ovstuzhenka are the following: low growth of fruit trees, frost resistance, high yield, early ripening of berries.

Note.There were no significant shortcomings in this variety. Among the minor disadvantages, one can note the not the best taste of the fruit.

Ovstuzhenka is an excellent development of modern breeding, which has many advantages and useful properties. This variety of sweet cherries combines the best qualities of the previous varieties.
