The homeland of the potato is South America. It got its distribution in European countries at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Potatoes were brought to Russia at the end of the 17th century by Peter I. There are a large number of varieties of potatoes today, but breeders from different countries do not stop there, breeding more and more new crops. Despite its "young" history, the Belarusian copt Uladar has earned good reviews from consumers due to its ease of cultivation (rather unpretentious to the type of soil) and excellent taste. With proper care and favorable climatic conditions, 2 crops can be harvested per season.

Breeding history of the variety

The homeland of the Uladar potato is Belarus. This is a relatively young variety, bred by its breeders V. Makhanko, G. Piskun, L. Vologdina and I. Kolyadka in the Belarusian Republican Unitary Enterprise "Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Fruit and Vegetable Growing." The potatoes were bred by crossing the Zhivitsa and Kolya varieties with each other. In 2008, having passed all the tests, the variety was included in the State Register of Belarus and was admitted to mass distribution. It was recommended for growing in Vitebsk, Mogilev, Gomel, Minsk and other regions. In 2011, Uladar was included in the Russian state register. On a 10-point scale of taste in Russia, it was assigned a solid 7. Today it is grown not only in Russia and Belarus, but also in all CIS countries.

Characteristics of Uladar potatoes

Belarusian potato variety Uladar its characteristics are very attractive for their early ripening, unpretentious care, high yield, long shelf life and transportation, excellent taste. This variety is rightfully considered one of the best in Belarus, although it was bred relatively recently at the beginning of the 21st century.

The characteristic of Uladar potato classifies it as a crop with an early ripening period. You can start harvesting 1.5-2 months after planting; during this period, up to 1 kg of harvest can be harvested from one bush. But for full ripening it will take at least 70 days, respectively, the yield at the same time increases at least 2 times.

Uladar potatoes are characterized by high yield

The height of the bushes can reach 65 cm, the color of the leaves is rich, bright green, medium in size. During the flowering period, flowers appear with 5 petals and a yellow core, reaching several centimeters in diameter, of a purple hue.

Seed potatoes Uladar has a rather powerful and developed root system; up to 12 potatoes can ripen in one bush. The ripe fruit has a regular oval shape, light beige with shallow eyes and smooth skin. The weight of one potato varies between 130-180 grams. The pulp is characterized by a slightly yellowish tint. Due to the low starch content (about 12%), the fruit does not boil during cooking, partially retaining its original shape.

The culture tolerates a relatively short dry season, while not reducing fertility. In case of severe drought, moderate watering is required. The culture is picky about the variety of soil and additional feeding. Has a long shelf life. In addition, the variety is resistant to various diseases and is almost not susceptible to pests, except for Colorado beetles.

Important! To prevent the reproduction of the Colorado potato beetle, the use of certain poisons up to several times per season is required, as well as the timely removal of beetle eggs by breaking off the infected leaves.

A distinctive feature of the variety is its high yield, so it is often grown commercially. On average, one hectare can be harvested up to 130 kg.

On a note. The most favorable climate for growing crops is considered to be temperate continental. Uladar potatoes, with proper care, are capable of producing 2 crops per season in the southern regions.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Based on the description of the variety, its positive aspects can be distinguished:

  • High crop yield and a fairly large weight of each potato. So, in comparison with other potato species, the average weight of the Vega variety varies between 90-130 gr., American - 80-120 gr., Serpanok - 90-150 gr. Against the background of these crops, the advantage in weight of the Uladar fruit is 130-180 grams. very obvious;
  • Good resistance to diseases and pests, for example, the potato variety Red Scarlet, Timo, Rocco is much more susceptible to diseases and pests (especially scab);
  • Rapid ripening in about 70 days. A number of other varieties reach full maturity over a longer period of time, for example, Ramos, Innovator, Lileya ripen in 80-90 days; Dynamite, Bouquet, Dar - in 90-110 days, and varieties Lorkh, Zorsky, Veteren need up to 140 days to reach maturity;
  • Excellent taste, potatoes are suitable for baking, frying, cooking, there are varieties that boil during cooking and do not retain their shape, for example, American or Slavyanka;
  • Does not require frequent watering, tolerates drought well, in comparison with the Sineglazka species, which requires weekly watering;
  • Long shelf life, preservation of presentation during transportation.

The disadvantages, according to reviews of farmers, include the attractiveness of the variety for the Colorado potato beetle.

Farmers boldly award 4.5 points to this table variety on a 5-point scale. The culture has become widespread in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia due to its good yield and a rather large weight of the root crop.

Features of growing varieties

You need to plant potatoes in a well-lit place; the complete absence of shady areas is encouraged. No pre-fertilization of the soil is required. But in early spring, bird droppings can be scattered over the soil surface by carefully digging it up. Planting in this case is possible after 2-3 weeks.

Any potato variety should be prepared for planting in advance, since it requires aeration (enrichment of tubers with oxygen and air), due to this, the sprouting sprat are stronger and healthier, which contributes to better survival and good yield. For this, the potatoes are placed in a small box in 2-3 layers and placed in a dark room with a temperature of no more than 15 degrees Celsius. Depending on the humidity inside, several times a week, the root crop is abundantly moistened with water using a puller.

If the fruits for aeration were purchased on the market or by hand, it is recommended to first dip them into a weak solution of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide (for 15-20 minutes) at the rate of 1-2 tbsp. for 5 liters of water. This will kill all parasites and pests on the tubers. Therefore, before buying seeds for aeration, tubers are subject to a thorough visual inspection for the presence of diseases and pests.

Important! For planting, you need to choose fruits of medium and small size, no more than a chicken egg. The varietal feature of Uladar is the ability to split a large tuber in half, without losing yield.

Uladar potatoes give a wonderful harvest

The quality of germinated kilts is determined visually, they should be more than 1 cm in length and 2-3 mm in diameter. Potatoes with thin and underdeveloped spines are not suitable for planting. 1 potato tuber must have at least 3 sprouts.

The description of the planting of the Uladar variety allows you to plant it in several options: in separate pits about 6-7 cm deep and a trench about 8-9 cm deep. The holes are dug at a distance of about 20 cm from each other, the distance between the rows should be at least half a meter.

The potato culture is placed in the hole with sprouts upwards so as not to damage them. You can sprinkle it on top with a small amount of humus (at the rate of 200-300 grams per bush). The hole is carefully sprinkled with earth, forming a slide up to 10 cm high.

During the season, loosening of the soil around the bush is usually required 2 times. The first time after a couple of weeks, when the first green shoots appear from the ground. The second time, when the height of the shoots reaches about 10-15 cm, and the first flowers will appear. It is not recommended to do this later in order not to damage the stems.

Loosening (hilling) is carried out around the bush, in the form of a hill, the earth is carefully sprinkled on the crop stem. This contributes to the enrichment of the plant with oxygen. All weeds are removed as needed.

For the prevention of various diseases during the flowering period, the plant is sprayed with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (100 grams per 5 liters of water), brilliant green or iodine (10 grams per 5 liters of water). As a fight against the Colorado potato beetle, factory-made preparations are purchased, for example, ATO BEETLE * (price of 10 ml for 35 rubles. RF), the consumption is 1-1.5 ml per 5 liters of water per 1 hundred square meters. During the flowering period, the culture is abundantly sprayed in the presence of pests. Reapplication is possible after 30 days.

Watering is moderate, no more than 1 time per week, taking into account hot temperatures. The description of the Uladar variety says that this crop does not like excessive moisture.

Potato shoots Uladar

The potatoes are dug out after the foliage has completely wilted. All shoots are shriveled and laid on the ground. This is a signal that the potatoes are ripe.

Storage of Uladar potatoes is standard: a relatively dry, cool, dark place is required. Closer to winter, sprat begin to sprout, which must be removed, which prolongs the shelf life of the root crop.

Characteristics and description of Uladar potatoes are very conducive to cultivation. According to experienced farmers, it does not require any particular care. The only drawback is that the Colorado potato beetle is very fond of this variety, which requires additional waste and effort in the care process. But this is more than offset by the taste and abundance of the crop.
