A vegetable of this variety appeared on the market in 2007 and immediately became very popular, thanks to its high yield, significant average weight of one tuber (it can reach 1 kilogram), resistance to diseases and pests. Most gardeners note such an important property of the Miner potato, as resistance to the attack of the Colorado potato beetle.
Potato history
Almost everyone knows the expression: potatoes are the second bread. It is difficult to imagine most dishes without this vegetable. It is either an integral part of them, or is used as a side dish. It is generally accepted that the Russians owe the appearance of potatoes on the table to Peter I. However, they began to eat the vegetable only in 1839, and until that time they perceived it as an ornamental plant.
Around the same time, breeders began to work with potatoes. The greatest success was achieved by EA Grachev, thanks to whose labors the first Russian potato variety, Early Rose, appeared. It is still popular among gardeners and can be easily found in summer cottages. Academician N.I. Vavilov played a significant role in the development of new potato varieties. - a famous scientist, thanks to whom many discoveries were made in breeding science.
All varieties are entered into a special State Register. It currently contains 426 types of potatoes. The oldest cultivar is the Lorkh cultivar, which can be grown in all twelve climatic regions of the country. Such zoning is one of the features of the Russian Federation, since each territory has its own parameters of weather conditions, which must be taken into account when choosing a variety for cultivation.
Description of the variety
Miner potatoes have the following characteristics:
- The variety is medium early (ripening period is from 65 to 80 days);
- The share of starch (the main characteristic of potatoes) ranges from 15% to 17%;
- The shape of the tubers is round, the average weight is from 100 to 200 grams, but in some cases it can reach one kilogram. As a rule, from 7 to 12 potatoes grow in one bush. The rind is yellow and the flesh is light yellow;
- High productivity. From one hectare harvested from 167 to 264 centners of the crop. The fixed maximum level is 464 centners;
- Good qualities for the consumer: rich taste, which allows you to actively use it in cooking (most often it is prepared by cooking or frying, while the taste only gets better);
- Long-term storage capacity (keeping quality is 97%).
Bravo potatoes are used mainly for cooking. But, due to the high content of starch and a number of other useful substances, it can be used in pharmaceuticals, chemical industry, and so on. It is recommended to grow this variety in the Volgo-Vyatka and Ural climatic regions. At the same time, consistently high yields of potatoes of the described variety were noted in other territories, which allows us to speak of its adaptation to the harsh climate of the country.
A distinctive feature of the variety is that it is practically not susceptible to various diseases, including such dangerous ones as potato cancer, wrinkled and banded mosaic and leaf roll virus. Sometimes this type of potato is affected by late blight and golden nematode.
Growing order
To get a high-quality and large harvest, it is necessary to properly prepare the planting material.
It is also recommended to sprout this potato variety. To do this, it is taken out of storage in 35-40 days and placed in a warm room with a constant temperature of 12 to 17 degrees Celsius.
In the process of germination, it is recommended to periodically (at least once a week) turn the seeds over, so they are placed in bulk on the racks at this time. In addition, this method of storage for the period of preparation for planting allows you to treat seeds with growth stimulants and mineral fertilizers. Resistance to pests and diseases will be added by treatment during germination of varietal potatoes with a weak solution of copper sulfate.
For planting potatoes, the miner should choose an area well lit by the sun. Like other varieties of this culture, the Miner does not like excess moisture, therefore, if the groundwater is close, it is better to plant the plant on hills. Site preparation begins in the fall. It is dug up, all weeds are removed. If the soil on the site is characterized by high acidity, then lime or dolomite flour should be added to it. In the spring, it is necessary to re-dig the area and apply fertilizers: humus or peat (if necessary).
The optimal time to plant high-quality potatoes Miner is considered the end of April - early May, since it belongs to the category of mid-season varieties. To be sure that the planting time has come, it is recommended to measure the soil temperature at the depth of the shovel bayonet (12-15 centimeters). As soon as it is 7-8 degrees Celsius, then the seeds can be laid in the ground.
Potato care is quite simple. First, it is necessary to periodically loosen the soil with a rake and remove weeds. This makes it easier for the first shoots to appear. As soon as the sprouts of the crop reach a height of 15-20 centimeters, they should be hilled in order to ensure the development of the root system and the formation of a large yield. Usually, the natural level of precipitation is enough for potatoes, but in case of drought, it is recommended to provide the plant with additional moisture in the amount of no more than 3 liters per bush. Top dressing is carried out three times:
- The first is during the period of growing tops;
- The second - as the buds form;
- The third - during flowering and ovary formation.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
A description of the potato variety Miner would be incomplete without indicating its advantages and disadvantages. Gardeners point out as advantages:
- Excellent taste;
- High yield of marketable products, which makes it easy to sell it on the market, which means it can be grown for commercial purposes;
- Ripening speed;
- Long-term storage capacity (keeping quality reaches 96%);
- High content of the main nutrient in potatoes - starch;
- Resistance to various diseases and pests.
As disadvantages, the laboriousness of the preparation of planting material can be noted, but it is more than compensated for by the large volume of the crop.
So, the Miner potato ripens 65-80 days after planting, which allows those who grow it to get access to the nutrients it contains rather quickly. This variety is used mainly in cooking, due to its taste characteristics. To obtain a high-quality harvest, labor-intensive preparation is required, but it is not picky about care. But if all the recommendations for growing are observed, the weight of one tuber can reach 100 grams.
