The name of the bird comes from the city of Phasis, which was located in Colchis, and the Argonauts brought pheasants to Europe. Of course, this is a legend, but such a beautiful bird deserves a legendary origin! The pheasant in the CIS lives in the south of Russia, the Caucasus, the Far East and the republics of Central Asia. Pheasants easily adapt in different climatic zones, so they are bred and relocated to the Moscow region, the Volga and other regions.

Where and how you can find a pheasant

To learn how to catch a pheasant, you first need to understand where to look for it. These birds cannot live in dense forests due to the large number of predators and the lack of familiar food. But they willingly choose the steppe expanses with tall grass, thickets of bushes and reeds for habitation. These birds need the proximity of reservoirs.

Pheasants are sedentary, their heavy bodies are poorly adapted to flight, but when their chicks grow up, the flock can migrate to a new place. The pheasant runs fast on the ground, helping itself if necessary by flapping its wings. Birds are very shy, it is impossible to accustom them to the owner, they are afraid of all people and when they see them they run away or take off noisily, screaming and flapping their wings. Nests for nestlings are primitive - a small depression in the ground and some dry grass. They arrange them in secluded thickets of bushes or tall grass, it is in such places that they need to be looked for. At the same time, one should not forget that there must be a reservoir and food sources nearby. For example, it is worth looking for pheasants near vegetable lands, berry bushes.

Pheasants feed on both plant and animal food in the form of insects, lizards and even small mice. From plant food they are able to eat cereal grains, greens, they are very fond of berries and often harm gardens and vegetable gardens, pecking at grapes, ripe tomatoes, raspberries.

Where and how you can find a pheasant

During the day, pheasants prefer to sit still, feed in the morning and evening, then they need to be caught.

On a note! In winter, it is easy to track a pheasant by following tracks in the snow.

In autumn, the grown brood can go to more open places, where they can also be tracked down.

It is good for a hunter to walk on a pheasant with a dog, which can easily find a hidden bird. At the sight of a person, a pheasant can deftly hide and sit motionless or quickly and imperceptibly escape, and from under the dog it will take off and immediately reveal itself.

Pheasant fishing has different purposes. If a hunter catches a bird for meat, a gun or a pheasant trap will be used, which injures the birds. And if the goal is to catch a pheasant for subsequent breeding as a poultry, the use of a gun, a dog and traumatic traps is unacceptable.

The most popular pheasant traps

Pheasants are birds suitable for breeding. Their dietary meat is in demand, they say, eating it can be cured of diseases of the stomach and pancreas. But in terms of egg production, the pheasant lags far behind its chicken relatives, its eggs are not tasty and unattractive in appearance, so it is worth keeping pheasants solely for the sake of meat.

Of course, in order to start a pheasant farm, you can buy birds, but having learned how to catch pheasants, everyone will probably want to try it on their own. You should start with tracking. These birds know how to disguise themselves, literally dissolving in the grass, and nests are placed in inaccessible places.Before you start fishing, you will have to observe and study their movements and daily favorite routes. Scattered feathers can indicate the proximity of the nest, and in winter - traces.

How to catch a pheasant alive

The "wolf cub" is a sparing trap for a pheasant. This is a wooden cage 1.5 m high, its mesh door is fixed from above and can only open inward so that the pheasant can freely enter but cannot get out. A bait is placed inside, to which the bird will have to be accustomed. In the first few days, the trap is set without doors, so that the pheasants feed easily and cease to be afraid. After installing the door, the pheasant can be caught. The hunter must be nearby and guard the cage from predators. The caught bird must be immediately removed from the trap and transferred to its new habitat.

Hunters often use pheasant loops. Before installing them, you need to find out exactly where the birds are daily. Placing the loop in the right place is the key to a successful capture.

Advice! If you install several loops at once, the effectiveness will increase significantly.

For the manufacture of loops, soft metal wire, horsehair, thick nylon fishing line, hemp are used. A loop about 7 cm in size is made at the end, the opposite end is threaded into it. The hinge material must be springy, the hinge must maintain its circular shape. The loops are hung on a wire between the trees, as soon as the bird flies into the loop, it will tighten. The caught bird is immediately removed and carried away.

Traps - the loops are easy to make, this is an indisputable plus, the disadvantage is that you cannot catch more than one bird in a loop, or you may not catch it at all, since pheasants sometimes notice it.

To catch several individuals at once, nets are used, fishing is carried out by the corral method. Such a trap would require 300 meters of net, approximately 6 meters wide.

Then proceed as follows:

  • to install traps, the darkest places are chosen, it is even better to do this at night;
  • the net is screwed to the hammered pegs at a height of half a meter from the ground, and in the middle is a high stake with a rope tied to it, everything is covered with branches;
  • the flock slowly approaches the trap;
  • as soon as the pheasants are at the net, the beater gives a sign to his partner, the net is dropped for prey.

If the hunter managed to find a nest, the birds can be fed, so that they can then be caught by making a trap for the pheasant with their own hands. It is a frame covered with a net. It is placed obliquely above the feeder and propped up with a rail with a rope tied to it. Place your favorite food in the trough, such as raisins or fresh grapes. When the birds get carried away with food, you need to sharply pull the rope, the trap will slam shut. Wait until the caught pheasants calm down and remove them from the trap.

A simple and affordable way is to catch a pheasant with a hook. Before you catch a pheasant, you need to feed it. It is convenient to use boiled corn as bait, which is scattered and hung around the intended place of capture. A large fish hook is chosen, for example, 10, several grains of corn are strung on it. The hook with the bait is suspended at a height of 0.5 meters from the ground and tied tightly. The disadvantage of this method is its invasiveness.

The main condition for breeding birds on a pheasant farm is the health and tranquility of the livestock, and most traps either injure the birds or are very frightening. Perhaps the most gentle way to catch pheasants is to put them to sleep. Sleeping aids are mixed into pheasants, for example tablets, they are placed inside raisins. Pheasants gnaw at food, after a while they fall asleep. The only thing left for the hunter is to quickly collect the sleeping birds and transfer them to their new habitat.

Pheasant farm

Pheasants are very fertile, despite the fact that they are a desirable object for hunting, the population is growing noticeably. There are so many of them that the harm to vegetable gardens and orchards becomes tangible. If a gardener sets up snares or traps from the net to catch a pheasant, he will immediately "kill two birds with one stone" - he will protect the plantings from the attacks of voracious birds and get tasty and healthy meat for his family. But after all, not every gardener, and even more so a gardener, is capable of this, but the plantings must be protected, then the birds will have to be scared away.

Advice! Many birds, including pheasants, are afraid of the glittering sunbeams. A simple and at the same time effective way is to tie sparkling packaging from bouquets, ice cream, chips to the bushes with the harvest. Old computer disks that sparkle in the sun with all the colors of the rainbow work well.

And, of course, the traditional method is to install stuffed animals that look like a person. If they spin from the wind and thunder, the effect will increase.

Obviously, any of their methods of catching pheasants requires work, patience and skill. Nevertheless, the result in the form of a beautiful and healthy bird that has taken root at home will be a well-deserved and coveted reward.
