The rose from the family of rosaceae has been called the queen of flowers at all times. There are about 350 species and more than 25 thousand varieties of this plant. In the twentieth century, such famous scientists as I. V. Michurin, N. I. Kichunov, N. L. Mikhailov, I. I. Shtanko were engaged in breeding. One of the most demanded groups is hybrid tea roses. They are actively used by landscape designers, and gardeners decorate their own plots with them.
History of creation
Hybrid tea roses were bred by crossing remontant and tea varieties back in the second half of the 19th century. They have flowers of various colors, large, double, fragrant, graceful shapes. They are distinguished by the aroma of freshly picked tea, the shades of which change depending on the place of growth.
Gloria Day is a unique hybrid that has spread throughout the world. It was taken out in the 20th century during World War II. The author of the variety is the breeder Francis Meilland (France).
The Latin name of the rose Gloria Dei translates as "Glory of the Lord". Other names are also registered:
- France - Madame Mayan;

Good frost resistance, but the plant needs careful shelter for the winter. In this state, it tolerates cold snaps down to -20 ° C. However, care must be taken that the roots do not become blocked during a sharp thaw.
Growing features
In order for the plant to bloom profusely and for a long time, you need to responsibly approach the choice of a planting site.
Gloria Day's hybrid tea prefers:
- highly fertile (with a humus content of 3-6%), containing a large amount of soil organic matter;
- drained;
- water and breathable;
- neutral or slightly acidic.
In central Russia, plants are planted in early May, when the soil warms up. Site preparation is carried out before winter:
- dig deeply;
- fill with fertile garden soil;
- make organic and mineral fertilizers.
The landing site should be sunny and protected from cold winds.It is better if legumes or asters grew here earlier.
In the spring, on the settled soil, planting holes are prepared for roses with a depth of 25-30 cm. When planting, the shoots are cut off, leaving 2-3 most developed ones with a length of 10-15 cm. The upper buds, over which the cuts are made, should be facing outward of the bush. The root system of the rose is also shortened by 20-30 cm.
Gloria Day roses are planted from a distance:
- in row spacing - 40-60 cm;
- in a row - 30-40 cm.
When planting, the roots of the rose are straightened so that they are not crushed and not bent. At the end, the bush is spud to a height of 15 cm.
In the first year, caring for plants consists of watering, loosening the soil, weeding. On poor soils in the second half of the season, fertilizing is carried out.
In subsequent periods of the growing season, immediately after removing the shelter, sanitary pruning of the rose is carried out - all interfering branches, injured and frostbitten shoots are removed.
Rose Gloria Day is hygrophilous, responsive to feeding. The earth is moistened every 3-4 days in the evenings. Only warm, settled water is used for irrigation. The jet is directed to the root.
The soil is fertilized regularly:
- Humus and compost are introduced in the spring.
- During the budding period - a solution of humus or bird droppings.
- After the first flowering - complex mineral fertilizer.
In the summer, they conduct systematic work to prevent the appearance of diseases and pests. The greatest danger to the Gloria Day rose is:
- Black spot - occurs with high humidity, strong thickening of plantings, excess or deficiency of nutrients. If a disease is detected, they are treated with fungicides (Profit, Skor, Oxyhom, etc.).
- Rose aphid - It feeds on cell sap, which makes the plants weaken and wither. What drugs are used to combat: Karbofos (60-90 g per 10 l), Chlorophos 0.17%, soap solution (300 g per 10 l).
Formative pruning of a rose is carried out at the end of autumn. It rejuvenates the bush and provides abundant flowering for Gloria Day in the new season.
With the onset of stable cold weather in the second half of October, the bushes are spudded, covered with sawdust and spruce branches. In the spring, after the snow melts, the roses are opened gradually so that there is no sunburn. Frozen and damaged parts are cut off before growth begins.
To preserve varietal qualities, the Gloria Day rose is propagated by cuttings. Planting material is harvested when the branches are lignified, but have not yet stopped growing. Cuttings are taken in the form of fragments of the middle zone of the shoots. They are placed in a 5 cm thick layer of washed sand, under which there is a fertile soil mixture. From it, the plant receives nutrients during the rooting process.
Advantages and disadvantages
Rose Gloria Dei not accidentally received the title of the standard of hybrid varieties. It is appreciated for its decorative qualities and extraordinary beauty of flowers.
In addition, the plant:
- quite unpretentious in leaving;
